Target Audience Research
- Research into the methods used by companies to target and address audiences.
- Analyse the techniques used to appeal to, engage and position an intended audience.
- Identify examples from similar products analysed.
- Research into audience responses to, and interaction with, media products.
Consider:
What are the target audiences for
the products you looked at when carrying out your genre research?
While this overlaps slightly with your genre research, you can point out the appeal of certain similar
existing films that have appealed to the same sort of audience you are going
for.
If you are doing the film/TV brief one way
to try to 'prove' this is to use IMDB to look at audience votes and
the differences between age group and gender. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0963743/ratings is an
example from 'Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging'.
You should consider who the products are for and equally, who they are not
for.
Research the
methods used by the production companies to target, position and address audiences.
- Look at the marketing campaign for you product (when/where).
- When/where was it distributed/exhibited
- Use of cross convergence.
- Actors/artists in the product.
- Use of social media
Research
into audience responses to, and interaction with, the media products.
- How did audiences respond to the product/marketing?
- Did they successfully engage their target audience?
- Did they engage more than one audience demographic?
- Did certain marketing/distribution strategies work better than others?
- Did anything go wrong in their attempts to engage their audience?
- What audiences were positioned in what way?
What have you learned from this research and how will you use it when you come to make your products?
- Consider your chosen form and genre
- Who your target audience will be (psychographic and demographic)
- What strategies you will use to engage with your audience.
