TASK 1: Yr 12- Analysis of the use of media language in similar media products

General Genre and Form Research

BEFORE you narrow your focus down to a specific genre or subgenre, you will need to show that you understand the general codes and conventions of your chosen mediums. To do this, you will need to analyse explore a range of texts.

Task- Analyse and evaluate the impact of a range of products for your chosen brief. You should examine at least 3 products for each part of your brief in detail.  Look at both micro features (e.g. shot types) and macro features (e.g. narrative). Then summarise the common elements that make up the codes and conventions of your chosen medium.

Success Criteria:
  • Identify the codes and conventions of your chosen genres and forms (e.g. TV and specifically the turning point/conflict/resolution, and TV websites OR front cover and double page feature article).
  • Look at a range of different genres for each (e.g. sci fi/horror/romance)
  • Focus on how specific techniques such as: layout and composition; editing; sound, etc. are used to create meaning.
  • Consider the way in which representations of events, issues, individuals and social groups (as appropriate) are constructed.
  • You need to consider how the choice and combination of elements of media language influences meaning and conveys viewpoints and ideologies.
  • Who is the target audience and what features are used to appeal to specific audience?
  • Link to theory you have studied over the year.
  • You should also consider where your products are viewed as well as why they are made.
